| Ulcerated Colitis or Ulcerative colitis (UC) is the inflammation of the inner lining of intestine (colon) and the rectum. Both become red, swollen, and ulcerated. Drug treatment is effective for about 70-80% of patients; Ileostomysurgery becomes necessary in the remaining 20-30%.
The procedure results in removing colon & rectum, with options of BCIR type Kock pouch continent ileostomy or conventional ileostomy or by leaving the anal sphincter muscle intact. J-pouch or reservoir is surgically constructed from the small intestine. An opening is made at the bottom of the pouch & sewn or stapled to the anal muscles to restore the intestinal passage.
